RIP Prince – The Sky has Turned Purple
What can I say. As the news broke last night I couldn’t believe another creative genius has gone from this World. I sat up reading all the comments on Twitter with the hashtag #RIP Prince.
One of the first images I saw was from Louise at Paper Panda. She is incredibly talented and in that first second of shock and grief her image summed up my feelings exactly. Have a look over on her Facebook Page – Paper Panda Papercuts
Then over on Kate Brazier – Artist and her interpretation of the purple one is amazing too.
I raced back from my appointment this morning to catch Lauren Laverne’s Morning Show on BBC 6 Music. I knew it would be bittersweet as we have just lost such an icon however I am sat here listening to her show, with the hairs on my arms standing on end. Those of you who know me know how much of a HUGE music fan I am, but Prince is something else.
My sister first introduced me to his music, for which I will be forever thankful. I spent my formative years literally playing his music, particularly Diamonds and Pearls, Love Sexy and Alphabet Street, till the tape wore out with my friend Sarah. Ahem I know, my kids won’t know what a tape is!
His music is just so creative, an eclectic blend of funk, soul, rock,R & B and Psychedelia like no other. Even though I played his music over and over again, I would hear something different in it each time. He introduced me to the incredible talent of Mavis Staples. Sinead O’ Connor’s Cover, yes cover, of “Nothing Compares 2 U”, written by Prince was surely one of the iconic pop videos of a generation.
I grew up to Prince:” Alphabet Street” ( I still know all the words to the rap!), “1999”, If I Was Your Girlfriend”, “I Wanna be Your Lover.” I have too many favourites. “Purple Rain” makes me cry every time.
My kids were asking today “Who is Prince?” Well I went straight to Amazon and bought Love Sexy on CD (My tape’s still worn out and don’t worry, I’ll censor it for their young ears! ) and ” Kiss” came on just then. My littlest instantly started to wiggle her bum and break into a boogie. Great to see my love of Prince is carried on into the next generation!
Today is one of those days where I feel privileged to do what I do, Working for myself and listening to a morning of amazing music, a whole show dedicated to the Purple One – Thanks Lauren, I knew I could rely on you. I think if we look up to the sky tonight, it will have turned purple. Prince you changed my life. Your creativity is an inspiration to all music genres, all walks of life. If creativity is fundamental to the soul, then all our souls are richer for your very being.
